Chapter Twelve

Red channelled his frustrations into kicking the ball. It sailed passed the goalie into the post. The men on his team whooped. Ifeanyi ran to pat his back. It was a Wednesday night, and he was playing soccer. Hitting the gym could be monotonous, so he’d jumped at Ifeanyi’s invite. They played seven a-side in a playful match.

After going for forty-five minutes, they stopped for a break. Running across the pitch made it easier to ignore the persistent ache in his chest. He’d fucked up. He didn’t want it to end this way with Dawn. It was too soon.

Following his blunder, he didn’t even know what to say. He still couldn’t understand why Evelyne’s name had slipped out of his mouth like that, a deep self-betrayal when his ex hadn’t crossed his mind in forever. To make matters even more complicated, Ireti had thrown a fit on the way home after he’d dropped off Dawn and Folake.

“Since when have you been hanging around with that girl?” Ireti had demanded as he drove out their estate. “And how do you even know where she lives?”

His nostrils had flared, and he’d ignored the question as he drove.

“You don’t want to answer me?” Ireti had bristled. “I hope that girl isn’t distracting you from Evelyne.”

“Evelyne and I broke up.”

“What!” Ireti had exclaimed, as if this was her first time hearing it. Then, incredibly, she’d fished her phone from her purse and dialled. “Hello, my dear Evelyne.”

Red’s pulse had speeded. He’d squeezed the steering wheel tightly.

“I am fine, sweetheart. Redeemed wants to speak to you.”

“I’m driving,” he’d said through gritted teeth. Ireti was being plain unreasonable.

“Park the car,” she’d instructed.

“Not at this time of the night.” He’d said nothing as she tried to goad him into speaking with Evelyne and barely listened when his mother rounded up the call. Ireti loudly promised he would call Evelyne later.

He failed to understand why Ireti was so invested in him and Evelyne being together. He was well aware of the close friendship she shared with Evelyne’s mother, but it wasn’t the reason he’d started dating Evelyne in the first place. Now as he drank water, he found himself questioning his version of events.

Did Ireti engineer our relationship?

He and Evelyne often saw each other growing up. In fact, there was a photo of them as toddlers sitting in a bath together. Whenever he was forced to hang out with Evelyne in his early years, it was like hanging out with a sister.

It all changed in freshman year at college. Lonely in a foreign country, he had sought the familiar. It had all seemed natural, but now, he recollected how Ireti had secured the admission form to the University of Virginia for him. Had she planned everything out with Aunty Adanma, placing the pawns and then stepping back to watch things fall into place?

This wasn’t the first time he’d interrogated his life events, and he was getting tired. He couldn’t continue second-guessing himself like this.

The men resumed the game, and he zoned in on the action, grateful for the physical exertion.
